Definition of Youth Work

Youth Services

The Youth Work Act, 2001, defines Youth Work as a planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and enhancing the personal and social development of young persons through their voluntary involvement and which is:   

a) complementary to their formal education and training; and,

b) provided primarily by voluntary youth work organisations.

The role of Donegal Education and Training Board (ETB)

  • Provide assistance and support to the Youth Work organisations in Co. Donegal;
  • Administer youth related Grants from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY) and other statutory agencies;
  • Implement the National Quality Standards Framework (NQSF) for Youth Work;
  • Participate in the work of the Donegal Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC);
  • Participate in other youth related committees or groups;
  • Completion of annual youth work progress reports to DCEDIY; and,
  • Support Donegal ETB’s Youth Work Committee to advise and make recommendations on the performance of the ETB’s youth work functions.

Donegal ETB, in conjunction with the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration, and Youth (DCEDIY) provides administrative/financial support, either directly or collaboratively for the following Youth Programmes throughout Donegal:

UBU Your Place Your Space

Donegal ETB is seeking an organisation to deliver a Youth Service in Co Donegal

We are currently seeking an organisation with experience of providing services to young people, to deliver a youth service to young people in Inishowen, Co Donegal. This new project is being established in line with the UBU Your Place Your Space scheme funded by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Inclusion and Youth (DCEDIY).

The organisation we are seeking should:

  • Exemplify good practice in relation to vision, methodologies, governance, compliance, programme design, delivery and evaluation.
  • Be experienced in working with targeted young people aged 10-24 years with complexity of needs, using non-formal educational methodology.
  • Operate in an out-of-school setting, including evenings, weekends and school holidays.
  • Understand the nature and needs of young people living in disadvantaged communities and offer appropriate responses.
  • Be able to devise and measure effective responses to the needs of the target group.
  • Be committed to on-going sharing of learning and collaboration.

Local Youth Club Grant Scheme 2024

The Local Youth Club Grant Scheme (LYCGS) aims to provide funding towards the needs of volunteer led youth groups and clubs in all areas of Co. Donegal. National Quality Standards Framework (NQSF)

The National Quality Standards Framework (NQSF) is a support and development tool for the Youth Work Sector.

Targeted Youth Employability Support Initiative 2024

The aim of the Targeted Youth Employability Support Initiative (TYESI) is to engage and support harder to reach young people aged 15 to 24 years who are not currently in employment, education, or training.  The focus of the initiative is on soft skills and developing these in relation to employability. 

The focused interventions are intended to provide community-based support to assist young people to attain a level of confidence and agency to engage in a wide range of currently available progression routes, programmes or services, for example Youthreach, Community Employment Schemes, Traineeships, Apprenticeships, Pathways to Work and/or progress into employment. 

The TYESI is funded by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth and administered by Education and Training Boards.
